Your guide to UN and UN documents and reports


United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research - UNIDIR was established in 1980 and became an autonomous institution within the framework of the UN organization in 1982. The institute is based in Geneva.


The purpose of UNIDIR is to conduct applied research in the field of disarmament and international security, as well as other related issues such as:

  • preventive diplomacy
  • confidence-building measures and verification
  • refugee security
  • landmines
  • biological and chemical warfare
  • economic aspects of disarmament.

UNIDIR's field of research:

  6. Managing exits from armed conflicts

UNIDIR is funded by voluntary contributions and a small UN grant.
