The United Nations Peacebuilding Commission will, according to Resolution 1645, “marshal resources at the disposal of the international community to advise and propose integrated strategies for post-conflict recovery, focusing attention on reconstruction, institution-building, and sustainable development in countries emerging from conflict”. The Commission is a subsidiary organ of the General Assembly and the Security Council and it has an advisory function towards all member states.
The Commission has 31 member states: 7 members selected by the Security Council, 7 members elected by the ECOSOC, 7 members elected by the General Assembly, 5 top providers of assessed contributions to United Nations budgets and of voluntary contributions the United Nations funds, programmes and agencies and 5 top providers of military personnel and civilian police to United Nations missions. Seven of these member states will be selected according to geographical distribution and post-conflict experience.
The real work of the Commission will be performed by its country-specific committees tailored to suit the given post-conflict context.
