Functional Commissions

In order to perform all the functions within the ECOSOC agenda, a number of commissions, subcommissions and committees have been established. Some of these are the so-called functional commissions, which are deliberative bodies whose role is to consider and make recommendations on issues in their areas of responsibility and expertise. They are:

The Functional Commissions are required to report annually to the ECOSOC on their activities submitting draft resolutions and recommendations to the Council.  

Documentation

The suborgans of the ECOSOC publish their annual reports in the documentary series Supplements to the Official Records of the Economic and Social Council. A complete collection of these supplements in print will be found in the UN Collectioof the Dag Hammarskjöld Library, Uppsala, and in the libraries at UN Headquarters in New York and Geneva

The Functional Commissions publish their documents under their symbols. The documents in print for the period 1942-1992 can be accessed through UN Collection of the Dag Hammarskjöld Library, Uppsala, and in the libraries at UN Headquarters in New York and Geneva.

Documents from the subsidiary bodies are published electronically from 1993- in the United Nations Document System - ODS

References to documents with links to full texts for recent years can be retrieved through the UNBISnet - the online catalogue of the UN Libraries in New York and Geneva. 

A web portal to the ECOSOC subsidiary bodies is posted its official web site. 


Printed Indexes

The United Nations Documents Index contains bibliographic information about all documents from the subsidiary bodies.
A complete collection of all indexes is held by the Dag Hammarskjöld Library, Uppsala, and by the libraries at UN Headquarters in New York and Geneva.
