UN Tribunals

The United Nations has established two international tribunals designed to bring to justice the instigators and perpetrators associated with wartime atrocities in Yugoslavia and Rwanda: the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR)

These tribunals have been established by Security Council resolutions adopted under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. They have a threefold function: to do justice, to deter further crimes and to contribute to the restoration and maintenance of international peace.
